For many years, non-surgical retreatment was considered the best approach for root canal treated teeth with endodontic pathology, should the patient choose to preserve them. Surgical retreatment was always considered more aggressive and less successful. For surgery to be deemed appropriate, it should always be preceded by the non-surgical counterpart. This concept has changed over the last decades; the use of modern equipment and materials has increased the success rate from 60% to 85-90%.

During this lecture, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment modality. Contrary to older beliefs, non-surgical retreatment might cause more apical microcracks and be less effective. Its effectiveness is also quite questionable in cases of anatomical alterations like ledges or perforations and in cases of broken files in the apical third of the canal. The surgical approach might address the problem much better and more predictably in these cases. Cases from each of the aforementioned categories will be presented.

The use of Piezotome will be extensively discussed. The advantages and disadvantages will be presented with videos and accompanying literature. One of the most important utilizations of Piezo in endodontic microsurgery, the bony lid technique, will be explained in detail. Historical articles and the evolution throughout the years, together with cases and the indications in endodontic surgery, will be discussed. Attention will also be given to cases where guided surgery facilitates the procedure and reduces the surgical time.

Last but not least, the impact of surgery on soft tissues will be discussed. Ways to avoid scar tissue formation or gingival recession will be shown. The lecture will close with some advanced soft tissue management cases, using either mini-flaps or coronally advanced flaps in the course of endodontic surgery.

De snelle evolutie van artificiële intelligentie (AI) geeft verschillende industrieën een nieuwe vorm en tandheelkunde is daarop geen uitzondering. Deze keynote presentatie zal ingaan op de transformerende invloed van AI op de tandheelkundige zorg. Beginnend met een overzicht van AI als abstract concept, zullen we de ontwikkeling ervan volgen via baanbrekend onderzoek en de integratie ervan in klinische instellingen in de tandheelkunde.

We verkennen de fundamentele theorieën en technologische ontwikkelingen die AI hebben voortgestuwd van theoretische concepten tot praktische hulpmiddelen. De belangrijkste mijlpalen in het onderzoek zullen worden belicht en er zal worden aangetoond hoe algoritmen voor machine learning, neurale netwerken en data-analyse een revolutie teweeg hebben gebracht op het gebied van diagnostische nauwkeurigheid, behandelplanning en patiëntenmanagement.

In de klinische praktijk zijn de toepassingen van AI enorm en gevarieerd. We zullen inzicht krijgen in hoe AI diagnostische beeldvorming verbetert, behandelplannen personaliseert en administratieve workflows stroomlijnt. Praktijkvoorbeelden zullen de succesvolle implementatie van AI-gestuurde oplossingen in de klinische praktijk laten zien, met de nadruk op verbeterde patiëntenzorg, operationele efficiëntie en kosteneffectiviteit.

Deze presentatie zal ook ingaan op de uitdagingen en ethische overwegingen die samenhangen met AI in de tandheelkunde, waaronder gegevensprivacy, algoritmische vooringenomenheid en de noodzaak van voortdurende professionele ontwikkeling. Aan het einde van deze keynote zullen de deelnemers een uitgebreid begrip hebben van de reis van AI van abstracte concepten naar tastbare voordelen in de klinische praktijk en de toekomstige richtingen van AI in de revolutie van de digitale tandheelkunde.

Dr. Van Genechten en Dr. Beckers zullen ingaan op de faciale anatomie, de effecten van veroudering en de proporties die van belang zijn bij gezichtsveranderingen. Het oorspronkelijke protocol voor infiltreren is gebaseerd op de behandeling van primaire cariës. Echter, zodra de infiltratietechniek gebruikt wordt voor andere soort glazuurdefecten, blijkt de voorspelbaarheid voor een mooi resultaat maar matig. Erik-Jan Muts zal tijdens zijn lezing laten zien hoe een goede diagnose en diverse technieken, zoals transilluminatie, gebruikt kunnen worden om het originele protocol aan te passen en de voorspelbaarheid van de behandeling te vergroten. Het lijkt ook zinvol om niet alleen te richten op infiltreren, maar ook op additieve behandelingen als micro-abrasie, bleken en het gebruik van composiet.

In deze praktisch georiënteerde sessie focussen we ons onder andere op diverse technieken die aangewend kunnen worden om het originele protocol aan te passen en de voorspelbaarheid van de behandeling te vergroten.  Na deze workshop kunt u technieken toepassen zowel in de anterieure als in de posterieure zone.
